History of the Trust

Andrew Berrien Jones, a descendant of Major John Berrien, is the grantor of the trust, having established it in 2017. Mr. Jones acquired the Berrien House in 2012 and has engaged in a meticulous restoration of the home. The exterior was completed in 2016, and work continues on the interior.

Throughout the restoration process, Mr. Jones has supported the study of the home’s original historic fabric and the study of the history of the home and its inhabitants. Among the most exciting of the finds has been the discovery of approximately 50 wallpaper and border fragments from the 18th and 19thcenturies.

Under the guidance of the Trustee, Carolyn Clay Swiggart, another Berrien descendant, the trust plans to continue the study of the house and the historical personages and events associated with it.
